Chapter Using Metric Units for Length You will need your data pages to complete the following. Only use these not your text for conversions.

The following is a lesson on how to do a conversion. Play close attention to the set up and the order things are done, because this is how you are to set up your conversions.

Question: How many millimetres are there in 13 centimetres?

To begin start with what you know: 13 cm

How many millimetres are there in 13 centimetres? Next set up your conversion factor adding a times sign and a line 13 cm x ________

How many millimetres are there in 13 centimetres? Write the units you want on the top and the units your getting rid of on the bottom- this way the units cancel out 13 cm x ________ mm cm

How many millimetres are there in 13 centimetres? Write the units you want on the top and the units your getting rid of on the bottom- this way the units cancel out 13 cm x ________ mm cm

How many millimetres are there in 13 centimetres? Then look at your data pages and fill in the numbers that match (1 yard = 3 feet) 13 cm x _10_ mm = 1 cm

How many millimetres are there in 13 centimetres? Solve the question (13 x 10 ÷ 1 = 130) 13 cm x __10_ mm = 130 mm 1 cm Remember to include your units.

By setting up your conversion the same each time you will ensure that you get a correct answer. This is the process that is to be used to complete all homework, even if it is simple and you “know” how to do it, it is good to practice on those questions so that you will know how to do it on the harder questions.
