Performance Management, part 2 OS652 HRM Fisher October 21, 2004

Agenda Presentation Who conducts performance evaluation? In-class exercise

Who conducts the evaluation? Supervisors Employee self-assessment Team members Combination methods Key issues include culture of the organization, opportunity to observe

Multi-rater (360°) feedback Often used for developmental purposes; can be used for perf. appraisal May provide for better opportunity to observe, but many political issues Facilitated feedback sessions can improve process, outcomes (Seifert, Yukl & McDonald, 2003) What do you do when the feedback differs across sources?

Manager ’ s Role What can managers do to maximize the effectiveness of the performance management process? – Generally not up to individual managers to decide systematic issues such as number of rating scale points Any issues/questions from your 601 role play?

Performance Evaluation Exercise Review and evaluate Clarkson ’ s course evaluation form as a method of evaluating instructor performance. – What does it measure? Are the criteria reasonable? – What rating scale is used? – To what extent will this provide instructors with useful feedback? Develop suggestions for improvement – How should this be used as part of the larger performance management process?

For next class Topic: Compensation Read Chapter 11 – How does the labor market affect an organization ’ s compensation decisions? – How does compensation affect motivation?
