Expository Writing Prompt pg. 123

Prompt  What is meant by the phrase “Consuming Kids?”  Brainstorm/Web

Topic Sentence  Clearly introduce your topic:  Start with the source of the title  Connect with the writing prompt  Example  Based on the documentary, “Consuming Kids,” I think the title means….

Example Based on the documentary, “Consuming Kids,” I think the title means that media is actually consuming kids with the constant bombardment of branding and advertizing with the indent to sell products. What I mean by consuming is that branding and advertizing are an overwhelming presence in all aspects of kids lives.

Support your topic:  Use details from the documentary to support your topic sentence.  Use your notes to paraphrase your evidence.

Paraphrasing  When paraphrasing you put the ideas from your source you need to put it in your own words.  You must also cite where and who you paraphrased (Because we introduced our source we only need to cite where we got it)  Be sure to add commentary to explain how your evidence supports your topic

Need 2 pieces of evidence from the documentary- be sure to cite your evidence  1. Media has aimed branding as early as infancy. The goal of this is to create brand loyalty (Rewiring Childhood). Brands can be found everywhere in kids lives.  2. Technology has also created a space where advertizing is customized for each individual child. Websites encourage kids to give personal data and based on that data they craft web-pages with ads that target the child's interests (A Brand New World).

Put it all together- with a conclusion  Based on the documentary, “Consuming Kids,” I think the title means that media is actually consuming kids with the constant bombardment of branding and advertizing with the indent to sell products. What I mean by consuming is that branding and advertizing are an overwhelming presence in all aspects of kids lives. Media has aimed branding as early as infancy. The goal of this is to create brand loyalty (Rewiring Childhood). Brands can be found everywhere in kids lives. Technology has also created a space where advertizing is customized for each individual child. Websites encourage kids to give personal data and based on that data they craft web-pages with ads that target the child's interests (A Brand New World). In American culture it is very difficult for kids to find a place free of branding and advertisements.
