Pinyin Method 1. You know how to say “peng2 you3” 2. Now you want to know how to write it. 3. Take your dictionary. 4. Flip through the page till “peng” 5. Find the second tone “peng”s. 6. Check the meanings and find “ 朋 “. 7. Now try “you3”

An Example

Radical Method 1. Now you have the character “ 你 ” and want to know how to read it and what it means. 2. Pick the radical “ 人 “ and find it in the “radical index table” with a radical number next to it. 3. Find the radical category/column according to the radical number in the next “table of characters”. 4. Count how many strokes for the rest of the character, “ 尔 ”. 5. Find the character under the corresponding “stroke number” heading, e.g. “ 五画 ”. 6. Find the character and you’ll see the pinyin. Now you know what to do.
