Triple Beam Balance A triple beam balance is a type of lever that is used to measure mass, or the amount of matter in an object. An object with an unknown mass is placed on the measurement tray. On the other side of a fulcrum, a set of sliding weights, called riders, slide on beams to balance the object.

Reading Triple Beam Balance Read the readings on the rider beams:

Reading Triple Beam Balance

Reading Graduated Cylinder When reading a graduated cylinder you need to keep the graduated cylinder on the desk and lower your eyes to the level of the meniscus and you read where the bottom of the meniscus is. Be sure to include one point of estimation in your reading.

Reading Graduated Cylinder Read the following readings on the graduated Cylinders A: ______ B: ______ C: ______ D: _______

Calculating Density A small block of wood floats on water. It has a mass of 200 g and a volume of 250 cm 3. What is the density of the wood? Read and Understand What information are you given? Mass of block = 200 g Volume of block = 250 cm 3 - Measuring Matter

Calculating Density A small block of wood floats on water. It has a mass of 200 g and a volume of 250 cm 3. What is the density of the wood? Plan and Solve What quantity are you trying to calculate? The density of the block = __ What formula contains the given quantities and the unknown quantity? Density = Mass/Volume Perform the calculation. Density = Mass/Volume = 200 g/250 cm 3 = 0.80 g/cm 3 - Measuring Matter
