Adding Integers on a Number Line
How to add integers on a number line Place a circle on the number line to represent the first number in the problem Since the operation is adding, the second number will tell you how far to move and which direction to move. A positive second number means you should move to the right. A negative second number means you should move to the left. The number you end on is the answer.
Example 1 Model 6 + 3 using a number line Start at 6 on the number line. Move three spaces to the right since 3 is positive. +3 Answer: 6+ 3 = 9
Example 2 Model -6 + 3 Start at -6 on a number line Move three spaces to the right since 3 is positive. +3 Answer: -6+ 3 = -3
Example 3 Model -6 + (-3) Start at -6 on the number line Move three spaces to the left since 3 is a negative number. + -3 Answer: -6+ (-3) = -9
Example 4 Model -5 + 3 on a number line. +3 Answer: -5 + 3 = -2
Example 5 Model 3 + (-9) on a number line + -9 Answer: 3 + -9 = -6
Example 6 Model -2 + (-5) on a number line + -5 Answer: -2 + -5 = -7
Example 7 Model 9 + (-12) on a number line + -12 Answer: 9 + -12 = -3
Example 8 Model 5 + (-9) on a number line + -9 Answer: 5 + -9 = -4
Example 9 Model -7 + 5 on a number line +5 Answer: -7 + 5 = -2
Example 10 Model 4 + (-4) on a number line + -4 Answer: 4 + -4 = 0
