The Adventure Continues at Issaquah Valley Elementary Friday night, March 25, :45-8:00 PM

Math Adventure is… A math-oriented puzzle event… … with a story i.e. Something is missing Clues are in the math puzzles … and a resolution The kids save the day Time for a party!

Math Adventure is not… A drop-off event A weekly school-wide activity A “we teach your kids” program A competitive event Possible without significant volunteer help

Teams Four students per team plus 1 parent coach. The coach is the nucleus of the team. Teams of 3-5 can work, but puzzles are built to be split 4 ways. We don’t assign teams – team cohesion is too important. Network with other families…. Ask your child’s friends (and their parents) Ask your child’s teacher for suggestions Ask the parents sitting around you tonight!

Team Meetings/Study Sessions Coaching techniques vary widely… Some teams study a lot, especially if they want to play up a level. Sometimes multiple teams study together, and then split up for the event. Some teams don’t have formal study sessions at all, and come just for the fun of it!

Math Curriculum In the past, math topics were taken from Math Expressions and Singapore Math curriculum. This year, the math will be aligned more or less with the Common Core (standards for students to reach by the end of each grade level). Puzzle sets will be available for levels 2 – 5 with some variation in between. Students may compete at any level, regardless of grade. Puzzles are not labeled, so no stigma. Singapore Math’s “Primary Math” workbooks can still be used for practice sessions and can be ordered at

Requirements Cost is $100 per team of 3-5 students. Teams of 4 are highly recommended, as the puzzles are built for four. Each team must provide a coach to chaperone the student’s throughout the event and assist with the puzzles as needed. In addition to the coach, each team must also provide an adult volunteer to work a station at the event (approximately 5:00-8:30 PM). The coach and volunteer must also attend a training session before the event.

Sound like a good fit? Here’s how to register: Pay the team fee online on the IVE PTA website at (Click on the “Order” button with the shopping cart icon). During or after fee payment, click the link to the Math Adventure website ( and complete the team registration information in the browser. Space is limited to 25 teams, so register early. Priority will be given to IVE students through December 18, 2015, then registration will open to students from other Issaquah schools. In the event of overwhelming demand, we may open another event on Thursday, March 24, 2016.
