The Official Guide to Hairdressing and Barbering Level 2 NVQ, , © Cengage Learning Identifying strengths and weaknesses The process of evaluation and review is called ‘appraisal’. It can be undertaken in two ways: 1.by yourself, i.e. self-appraisal (you measure your own strengths and weaknesses against set standards) 2.with your manager, trainer or supervisor on a more formal basis. Complete Activity 3 Self- appraisal Refer to textbook Chapter 2, pages 1– 6

The Official Guide to Hairdressing and Barbering Level 2 NVQ, , © Cengage Learning 2013 Self-appraisal The most important aspect of self-appraisal is having the ability to make an honest evaluation and review of your own progress. Admitting you are not good at something is not easy but if you are going be successful it must be done. Plan how you are going to improve the weaknesses. Don’t ignore your strengths make sure you keep them as strengths. Refer to textbook Chapter 2, pages 1– 6

The Official Guide to Hairdressing and Barbering Level 2 NVQ, , © Cengage Learning 2013 Formal appraisal The process where you meet with your manager/ trainer/supervisor and discuss your performance, agree strengths and weaknesses and set targets for improving your effectiveness at work. The salon will have a procedure that will be followed it may include: Before the meeting you may be asked to complete some form of self-appraisal. Your manager/trainer/supervisor may do the same. The results will be discussed and agreed by you both. A review of your last appraisal targets. Targets/objectives will be set to be completed by the next appraisal. Refer to textbook Chapter 2, pages 6–11

The Official Guide to Hairdressing and Barbering Level 2 NVQ, , © Cengage Learning 2013 The appraisal As well as the practical hairdressing skills performance, other criteria may be included in your appraisal. Any additional accomplishments and achievements that complement your work. Your contributions to the work of the team. Your work ethic (punctuality, willingness, behaviour, etc.). Your clientele (when you are qualified). Refer to textbook Chapter 2, pages 6–11

The Official Guide to Hairdressing and Barbering Level 2 NVQ, , © Cengage Learning 2013 SMART targets Well defined objectives will fit the SMART principle, this is a common target-setting system that ensures that expected outcomes are: Specific – The target(s) should be unambiguous and provide clear objectives. Measurable – Set in a context that is objective, i.e. must achieve 100% of sales targets. Achievable – Within the capable bounds of the appraisee. Realistic – Appropriate to the needs of the appraisee in relation to the appraisee’s abilities. Timed – Set with an agreed timescale.
