The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and it’s information system – setting the context László Balkányi, knowledge manager, SAU/STAKS/KM team European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control Istanbul, 25 September, 2009

April, 2009 What is ECDC? A European Union Agency which : is a member of the European Union (EU) family of ~ 22 agencies covers EU 27, EEA/EFTA countries, and as of 1 January 2008 integrating Turkey, The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Croatia “An independent agency, named the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control” (EC Regulation 851/2004) started four years ago, now operational in every aspect of its mandate “An independent agency, named the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control” (EC Regulation 851/2004) started four years ago, now operational in every aspect of its mandate

What is the role of ECDC? April, 2009  Identify, assess & communicate current & emerging health threats to human health from infectious diseases (this a ‘risk assessment’* role and an ‘advisory role’ to the EC and MS on risk management issues)  Detection of health threats: surveillance and epidemic intelligence;  Provide evidence-based scientific opinions/advice;  Strengthen preparedness and response – Operate the early warning system and response – Support MS in outbreak investigation and RA; – Build capacity through training  Health Communication (in the domain of infectious diseases) * no risk management is done directly by ECDC

What is ECDC’s independence? ECDC is independent in its technical and scientific work which has to be evidence-based -> no influence from any side (e.g. commercial companies, burocracies, national or EU level politics) In all other aspect of the work, we are part of the EU family: administration, communication, partnership with EU institutions, etc. ECDC is a scientific and technical institute April, 2009
