Bell Work Activity Directions: Please take out a sheet of paper and answer the following questions. A.List seven different defects that you have encountered when you have purchased products from stores. For instance, problems with shoes, electronic products or restaurant orders. B.Describe one defect that you were most displeased with and why. How was the issue resolved? 2 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

A. There are several important terms and definitions students need to know. B. Students will now complete the Matching Terms and Definitions handout on Analyzing Quality Control Systems. Students may work in groups. Warm-up Activity Analyzing Quality Control Systems Terms 3 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.

Attribute data and Pareto charts In manufacturing, products are designed and produced to customer specifications. Products that meet specifications are defined as conforming products. Products that do not meet specifications are labeled as NON-conforming or defective. The collection of data on NON-conforming products or attribute data is critical to implementing Statistical Process Control (SPC) programs. 4 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved. NO DEFECTS

Attribute data and Pareto charts Once attribute data is collected, the SPC team organizes the data in Pareto charts to gain a better understanding of how to prioritize the corrective actions. Principles of the Pareto chart were created by Italian engineer and economist Vilfredo Pareto in the mid 1800s. 5 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved. NO DEFECTS

Pareto Charts Pareto charts combine bar graph and line graph formats to prioritize occurrences of non- conforming data from highest to lowest. 6 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, All rights reserved.
