Unit E The Nature of Matter

Chapter 12 Properties of Matter

Lesson 1: What Makes Up Matter

Observing Matter 1.Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. a.Mass is the amount of matter that makes up an object. b.Volume is the amount of space that matter takes up. 2.An Atom is the smallest particle of matter that has the properties of that matter. 3.A molecule is a single particle of matter that is made up of two or more atoms joined together.

Three States of Matter 1.Solids a.A solid has a shape of its own. b.It has a definite shape and takes up a definite amount of space. c.The particles in a solid are arranged in a neat, regular order that gives the solid its definite shape.

2.Liquids a. A liquid takes the shape of its container and takes up a definite amount of space. b.The particles in a liquid can move easily from place to place but they stay close together. 3.Gases a.A gas has no definite shape and takes up no definite amount of space. b.The particles in a gas are not arranged in any pattern and they do not stay close together.

Lesson 2: How Is Matter Measured?

The Metric System 1.The Metric System is a system of measurement based on multiples of 10. a.Length is measured in meters. b.Mass is measured in grams. -Weight is the measure of the pull of gravity on an object. -Weight can vary but mass is constant. c.Volume is measured in liters.

Lesson 3: What Are Physical and Chemical Properties?

Physical Properties 1.Physical Properties are characteristics of matter that can be observed and that tell you what the substance is. a.Color, Shape, Texture (feel), Luster (shine), and Density (float) are examples of physical properties.

Chemical Properties 1.Chemical Properties are characteristics of matter that tell how one substance reacts with another substance. a.Chemical Properties are often related to how matter reacts with air, heat and water. b. Examples of chemical properties are the ability to cook, burn, rust, explode, and tarnish.
