Physical Change & Chemical Change
WHAT MAKES IT CHEMICAL?.
Any ability to produce a change in the composition of matter
Topic: Chemistry Aim: How does matter change? Do Now:
Section 1 Forming New Substances
Physical and Chemical Properties. Physical Properties A physical property of a substance is any property of a substance that you can observe without changing.
Physical & Chemical Properties Scientists use characteristic properties to identify matter.
Different properties Describe a substance based on its ability to change into a new substance with different properties.
Chapter 2: Common Reactions in Our Lives Unit A: Matter and Chemical Change.
Week #5 Quarter 2 (11/12-11/15) (calendar site) (calendar site) Tuesday, 11/12 Have out:  “Discovering Matter” activity  “Matter outline note” Activities/Assignments:
Chemical Reactions 8.5E Investigate how evidence of chemical reactions indicates that new substances with different properties are formed.
Matter Physical and Chemical Properties
What Does it Matter ?.
Matter.
Elements & Compounds Notes TEKS: (6.5) Matter and energy. The students knows the differences between elements and compounds Differentiate between elements.
Physical Property Characteristic of a pure substance that can be observed WITHOUT changing it into another substance.
NBI- August 19 Create a picture that shows the following about matter.
Indications of Chemical Reaction. Chemical Reaction A process by which one or more substances change to produce one or more different substances. A process.
Changes in Matter matter volume solid liquid gas physical property mass density solubility chemical property.

Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space (volume)
Matter.
Matter.
What Is Matter? Matter is anything that has volume and mass Volume is the amount of space taken up, or occupied, by an object Mass is the amount of matter.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE? Chemical vs. Physical Changes.

Properties of Matter Physical & Chemical Properties Mrs. Parnell Adapted from Mrs. Wolfe- GLHS.
Chemical Reaction Notes. Matter is everything around you. Matter is anything made of atoms and molecules. Matter is anything that has a mass.
Evidence of Chemical Reactions Temperature Change Heat is absorbed by the substances causing the temperature to decrease Heat is released by the substances.
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space (volume)
Properties and States of Matter
PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL CHANGES. Physical Properties  Can be observed using the five senses  Examples:  shape  density  solubility  odor  melting.
Physical Properties of MATTER and Changes MATTER can undergo!!

Properties of Matter Physical & Chemical Changes.
Introduction to Atoms. What are atoms? An atom is the smallest particle into which an element can be divided and still be the same substance.
Matter.
Properties of Matter Physical & Chemical Changes.
Describing Matter To describe matter we use properties! Property- a way to describe matter, a characteristic 2 types: Physical Chemical.
 When a substance bubbles it may be a clue that a chemical reaction is taking place.
CRCT STUDY GUIDE. Atoms and Molecules Atoms Smallest thing that can be identified as material Only consists of one element Smallest particle that retains.
Matter Learning Target: I can explain the properties of materials in terms of the arrangement and properties of the atoms that compose them. (3.1)
CHEMICAL PROPERTIES Describe a substance based on its ability to change into a new substance with different properties Different Properties!!!
PROPERTIES AND CHANGES Physical vs. Chemical. Physical Properties Any observation that can be made WITHOUT changing the composition of the matter. Examples:
Matter anything that has mass and takes up space (volume) – Examples: a brick has mass and takes up space a desk has mass and takes up space a pencil has.

 A chemical change is a change in matter in which the substance that makes up the matter changes into something else with different chemical AND physical properties! **A NEW SUBSTANCE IS CREATED!!**  All reactions involve energy (light, sound, or thermal) - Some require it to start, some give off energy, and some absorb energy.

 Change in Odor  Change in Temperature  Formation of Bubbles/Gas  Change in Color  Formation of a Precipitate (solid that forms when two liquids combine)
