SUBSTANCE ABUSE: Preventing Drug Abuse Ms. Mai Lawndale High School

Drug Abuse The most common psychoactive drug is alcohol Alcohol when used in moderation and responsibly is not extremely harmful All illegal drugs are irresponsible, no matter how it is used or how often The only healthy choice is to not use it at all

Refusing Drugs Refusing drugs can be uncomfortable or difficult if they are offered by a friend, but you should be prepared to resist peer pressure The best way to avoid drugs is to avoid people who use them, or choose activities that will not expose you to drug use

Alternatives to Drug Abuse People who use drugs want to change the way they feel (relax, energetic, escape anxiety or stress, bored) There is nothing wrong or unhealthy about wanting to feel good, however using drugs is unhealthy There are many healthy and responsible alternatives to drug use

Do This Instead… If You Want… Do This Instead Feel calm and relaxed Learn relaxation techniques, exercise, avoid caffeine Feel alert and energetic Exercise, sleep, healthy diet, try new activities Solve personal problems Learn techniques for dealing with stress, talk to a counselor Relieve boredom or depression Join a group activity, volunteer, take a course in something new Explore new sensations Get involved in artistic and creative things, art museums Find thrills and adventure Learn a new competitive sport, try challenging hobbies, read

Signs of Drug Abuse Although one sign alone does not mean that someone is abusing drugs, several signs together are a warning Changes in Behavior - lack of interest, mood swings, different friends, being secretive, borrowing money Physical Changes – sleeping problems, bloodshot eyes, dazed look, excessive sweating, unexplained rash, runny nose

Getting Help If you or someone you know abuses drugs, get help (group therapy, hotline, treatment centers, hospitals) Don’t be afraid to call for help because they are all confidential It is important to seek help ASAP to prevent terrible physical, mental, and social damage that drug abuse can cause
