Goal 2:Analyze influences on family life to ensure healthy family relationships.

Nuclear Family  husband  wife  child(ren)

Single-Parent Family  one parent (mother or father)  child(ren)

Blended Family  parent  step parent  child(ren)

Extended Family  mother and father  children  aunts and uncles  cousins  grandparents  etc.

Intergenerational  mother and/or father  child(ren)  grandmother and/or grandfather

Activity  Create a poster that depicts 4 types of families.  nuclear, single, extended, intergenerational

Meet Physical Needs  food, clothing, and shelter  health- nutritious food and healthcare  safety-set rules/teach responsibility

Promote Intellectual Development  share knowledge  stimulate thinking  encourage creativity  remain actively involved  learn from each other

Meet Emotional Needs  show love and acceptance  teach expression of emotions in a positive way  teach by example

Encourage Social Skills  communication  cooperation  respect for others  teach by example

Single Parent Households  33% of children live with a single- parent  22.6% of children live in a single-mother household  3.1% of children live in a single-father household

Longer Life Spans  average life expectancy is 77.6 years old  many parents and grandchildren take care of grandparents

Remarriage  7.2% of children live with a parent and a step parent

Family Crisis  social issues (drug/alcohol abuse, suicide, divorce, remarriage, family violence)  moving  changes in employment  health problems  financial problems

Activity  Journal: Reflect on your family. What family issues have caused a family crisis in your life? What did you learn from the situation?

Beginning Stage  2 people marry  establish a home  learn to live together  build relationship  work out roles  set goals for the future

Parenting Stage  become parents  focus on raising and caring for children  less time for activities as a couple

Launching Stage  transition  children leave and become independent  parents relate to children as adults

Middle-Age Stage  all children have left home  parents become a couple again  new hobbies, involved in the community, reassess careers  prepare for retirement

Retirement Stage  retire  time for leisure activities  smaller home/retirement community  health and independence become major concern

 stages are typical but not universal  divorce and remarriage cause a repeat of some stages  adult children sometimes stay at home  some keep working instead of retiring.

Activity  Draw a picture that depicts a stage of the family life cycle.

Respect  Accept and appreciate each other’s differences.  Follow the rules your family sets.  Give each other privacy.  Be considerate of each other’s feelings.

Communication  develops closeness  Actively listen to each other.  Be sensitive to each other.  Make time for each other each day.  Stay connected through technology- , cell phone, text, IM

Trust  develops family closeness  count on for help and support  take care of and meet needs  two way street

Emotional Support  positive words and actions  reassuring words and actions  hugs  help each other without being asked

Sharing  work toward common goals  divide responsibilities  family traditions  spend TIME together

Support System  extended family  neighbors and friends  community resources- church, Social Services, schools

Activity  Choose 3 traits that strengthen families.  Write an 11 sentence paragraph that explains these traits.
