Quality Education for a Healthier Scotland Nursing and Midwifery

Quality Education for a Healthier Scotland Nursing and Midwifery Current context  19 Care Home Education Facilitators  2 year, fixed term posts (Mar 2012)  Employment / funding model  Approx 325 care homes (236)  Approx 640 registered mentors (547)

Quality Education for a Healthier Scotland Nursing and Midwifery Aims of the role  Enhance the quality of the care home learning environment by supporting the education and development needs of staff to effectively support students within this setting.  Contribute to quality of care provided for older people in care homes through sign posting practice learning opportunities for nurses and support staff.  Support the development of both new and experienced mentors and those in wider practice education support roles.  Contribute to collaborative working between the care homes, the NHS and Education Institutions.  Maximise the contribution that care homes make to the development of the future nursing workforce across sectors.

Quality Education for a Healthier Scotland Nursing and Midwifery Dementia focused activity - examples  An RCN Dementia Bursary award has been used to assist care home staff in promoting a person centred approach to caring for people with dementia  A group of facilitators are exploring anticipatory care planning initiatives with their care homes  Facilitators are collaborating with AHP colleagues to build activity networks in care homes in relation to dementia  Dementia care initiatives being shared and adopted in care homes through forums such as Gerontology Interest Group, for example therapeutic singing groups  Facilitators have had national training session with NHS Dementia Consultant Nurse, cascading learning across their own regions
