San Mateo Biotechnology Career Pathway is a San Mateo County ROP Program Technical Lab Training supported by high level science concept development > SMHS - Biotechnology 1-2, 3-4, Biotech IR > Aragon HS - Biotechnology 1-2 > Capuchino HS - Biotechnology 1-2 > Carlmont HS - Biotechnology 1-2, 3-4 (SSP/demo site) > Sequoia HS - Biotechnology 1-2 > Mills HS - Biotechnology 1-2 (next year) Workplace Experiences including Career Exploration Field Trips, Job Shadows, and Summer Industry Laboratory Internships Over 700 students take SMCOE-ROP Biotech SMHS has after school and evening courses open to all county high school students

ROP Biotech Services Industry Internship Students are placed into unpaid or paid lab internship 60 hours of additional training before placement Summer Internship = hrs/wk for 8 weeks ROP provides Workman’s Comp & Liability Insurance Many interns continue into employment

San Mateo County ROP Biotechnology Successes and Accomplishments Biotech Education National Model since 1994 Over 5,000 students have been trained in the SMCOE-ROP Biotechnology courses Over 750 students have completed industry laboratory internships. Formal and informal partnerships with over 25 biotech companies and research institutions within a 30 min commute Program is being duplicated at several CC/HS sites all over the country Several regional and national awards Working on articulation/alignment with local college programs
