Andris Skuja :: January 2012 Kolkata-Mumbai Workshop Overview1 H C A L Kolkata-Mumbai HCAL Upgrade Workshop Overview of HCAL Upgrade Workshop Andris Skuja University of Maryland CERN, January 26, 2012

Andris Skuja :: January 2012 Kolkata-Mumbai Workshop Overview2 H C A L India-CMS participation in HCAL Five groups from Indian Institutes are participating in HCAL TIFR-EHEP Group, Mumbai TIFR-HECR Group, Mumbai Bhabha Atomic Research Center, Mumbai (HI) Panjab University, Chandigarh Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata In addition University of Delhi is collaborating with the CMS tracker community

Andris Skuja :: January 2012 Kolkata-Mumbai Workshop Overview3 H C A L The HCAL Upgrade Phase Zero (2012 – 2014) Some discussion Replace HB/HE HPDs Replace HO HPDs and electronics with Hamamatsu SiPMs and replacement electronics Replace Current HF PMTs with multi-anode PMTs & resurrect sourcing Associated DPG work Phase One ( ) This was the major item of the discussion Replace all HB/HE HPDs with new photodetector ( SIPMs)/ QIE10 /TDC option and associated electronics for ngCCM Replace VME readout with microTCA readout via the GBT chip (Note that signal splitting is already underway to verify viability) Replace Electronics for HF Associated DPG work Phase Two (Beyond 2020) No discussion

Andris Skuja :: January 2012 Kolkata-Mumbai Workshop Overview4 H C A L SiPMs and HPD replacement program The HPDs were the only photodetector available with an acceptable signal to noise in 1995 that worked in a 4 Tesla Field. Unfortunately they did not fare as well in a 0.3 to 0.5 Tesla field. They exhibited large intermittent and random “discharge” noise pulses due to dielectric flashover at the walls of the device. This was especially problematic for the HO Rings 1 & 2. By 2008 a new generation of photodetectors came on the market and the HCAL community decided to replace the HPDs by SiPMs. The replacement decision was driven not only by the desire to eliminate the “discharge” noise in HO, but also to eliminate HPD lifetime concerns for all of HCAL. We are planning on replacing all of the HCAL HPDs – the ones for HO in 2013/2014 and the remainder in 2016 thru In hindsight, this decision has proven to be the correct one, since all of the HPDs are showing large increased gain variations.

Andris Skuja :: January 2012 Kolkata-Mumbai Workshop Overview5 H C A L TIFR participation in the HO SiPM replacement A number of members of the TIFR – HECR group decided to participate in the HO Upgrade work. They were able to obtain resources to manufacture the HO upgrade electronics boards in Bangalore as well as conduct initial testing of these boards. They also participated in the Test Beam verification of these devices paving the way to use these devices in other projects of interest as well. In 2011, the Test Beam effort was joined by a few members of Panjab University as well. The Phase Zero effort was discussed briefly in India but no conclusions nor commitments were made. At present we are looking for people to help with the 2012 burn-in at CERN as well as the installation work in Groups from Rio (Brazil) have expressed some interest in participating in this work. However, we may still need experienced manpower for supervision in 2013/14.

Andris Skuja :: January 2012 Kolkata-Mumbai Workshop Overview6 H C A L Next HO Meeeting We invite our Indian Groups and our Brazilian Groups to join us next Tuesday for a discussion about HO burn-in, installation and commissioning work. Slawek will lead the discussion. The next HO meeting is on Tuesday, January 31 at 3pm. This hour is a bit late for our Indian colleagues in the long run. We will discuss the timing of the meeting in the future.

Andris Skuja :: January 2012 Kolkata-Mumbai Workshop Overview12 H C A L DPG work Olga and Frank gave very detailed presentations both in Kolkata and Mumbai about the areas in which HCAL needed additional manpower. Discussions continue but no additional commitments were made to my knowledge. Please update.

Andris Skuja :: January 2012 Kolkata-Mumbai Workshop Overview13 H C A L Specific Areas of Involvement

Andris Skuja :: January 2012 Kolkata-Mumbai Workshop Overview14 H C A L Additional Tasks

Andris Skuja :: January 2012 Kolkata-Mumbai Workshop Overview15 H C A L Caveat for Involvement

Andris Skuja :: January 2012 Kolkata-Mumbai Workshop Overview16 H C A L HB/HE Upgrade The photodetectors for all HCAL will be replaced by SiPMs. In addition, the HCAL towers will be segmented (probably in 3 segments for HB) and the response signal timed to better than a nanosecond by TDCs. This upgrade requires a major electronics overhaul including the ADCs (QIE10), the addition of TDCs and all of the corresponding digital electronics. The Phase One Upgrade discussion were very well attended in Kolkata SINP of Kolkata is playing an important role in the evolution of the electronics design and eventual deployment for the HB/HE upgrade. Hardware has been exchanged with the SINP group. Both TIFR–EHEP and TIFR –HECR groups expressed interest in joining this effort as well. Some electronics cards were given to the TIFR groups as well. In Mumbai the Phase One Upgrade discussions were very well attended both by physicists and engineers.

Andris Skuja :: January 2012 Kolkata-Mumbai Workshop Overview17 H C A L Phase I Upgrade Both Drew and Tullio gave excellent overview talks at Mumbai. I recommend these slides for perusal by anyone who wants a rather detailed view of the Phase I upgrade project. Jermey has good overview slides for the microTCA project (Level I backend electronics) as well. Note that all aspects of Phase I have a long chain of approval requirements by CMS and the LHCC before final commitments are made. However we require manpower and funding now for this stage of R&D and development work It is my impression that the Kolkata SINP group has passed a threshold and indeed are highly committed to participate in the Phase I Upgrade Discussions continue with TIFR-EHEP and TIFR-HECR groups Of course TIFR-HECR is completely committed to the Phase Zero HO HPD replacement project. Manpower at CERN remains a concern for 2012 and beyond. We are exploring the interests of the Panjab University Group.

Andris Skuja :: January 2012 Kolkata-Mumbai Workshop Overview18 H C A L Software support Indian groups have made a major contribution to the evolution of the CMS HCAL simulation as well as helping with the development of reconstruction software for CMSSW. Starting in 2012, Sunanda Banerjee will be the co-convener of the HCAL DPG (Detector Performance Group). It is hoped that considerably more involvement will follow.

Andris Skuja :: January 2012 Kolkata-Mumbai Workshop Overview19 H C A LSummarySummary The Indian Institute participation in HCAL has been crucial to the success of HO & HCAL in general in the past. It is obvious that that our collaboration on HCAL will continue for the duration of the Upgrades as well. We had a series of excellent discussions in Kolkata and Mumbai. HCAL is looking forward to a recommitment of our Indian Colleagues to their interests in HCAL both from a Manpower and Funding point of view. We also welcome expression of interest from the New World.
