Calculation strategies used at Barley Close
Parental involvement in education is so important. However, the way maths is taught in schools is very different to the way some of us were taught which makes it hard to help our children!
Key Stage 1 The principal focus of mathematics teaching in key stage 1 is to ensure that pupils develop confidence and mental fluency with whole numbers, counting and place value. This should involve working with numerals, words and the four operations, including with practical resources.
Lower Key Stage 2 The principal focus of mathematics teaching in lower key stage 2 is to ensure that pupils become increasingly fluent with whole numbers and the four operations, including number facts and the concept of place value. This should ensure that pupils develop efficient written and mental methods and perform calculations accurately with increasingly large whole numbers.
Upper Key Stage 2 The principal focus of mathematics teaching in upper key stage 2 is to ensure that pupils extend their understanding of the number system and place value to include larger integers. This should develop the connections that pupils make between multiplication and division with fractions, decimals, percentages and ratio.
Key Strands Number – place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions (decimals from year 4, percentages from year 5) Measurement Geometry – shapes, position and direction Year 2 upwards – Statistics Ratio and proportion and algebra – Year 6
Addition
Physical objects For the first stage of addition children will use real objects to support their working out. They will then use number lines.
Adding the tens in one jump and the units in another jump. counting on in tens and adding the units in one jump
The 100 Square – Jumping down to +10
Partitioning: = = = 77
Column addition – it is important children know what each digit means
Stage Three: Task: Use column addition to find
Subtraction Children will explore and develop ways of recording using objects and pictures for support. “Mr Shepherd looks after 8 sheep. He has lost 5 sheep. He has 3 left.”
Number lines with marked divisions Working towards using an empty number line... Counting backwards Arrows go underneath
100 square
Partitioning
Column subtraction
Multiplication Children will experience equal groups of objects and will start to count in 2s, 10s and 5s. By the end of year 4, pupils should have memorised their Multiplication tables up to and including the 12 Multiplication table and show precision and fluency in their work.
Arrays 3 x 5 5 x 3
Number line
Partitioning 42 x 5 40 x 5 = x 5 = = 210
Short multiplication Use this method to find 14 x 6
Long Multiplication Year 6
Division Children will experience equal groups and share items in play and problem solving.
Grouping – how many groups of 3 Can I make with 18?
Progressing to larger numbers... Progressing to using known facts... Year 6
