Adding Rational Numbers

Warm Up

Absolute Value The absolute value of a number is the distance from zero, or its length, on a number line and is always expressed as a non-negative number.

The temperature in the morning was -3.5⁰F. By noon, the temperature had dropped by 1.5⁰F. What was the final temperature at noon?

What number is 7.5 units to the right of -3 on a number line?

Ulysses is climbing a mountain. One morning, he hiked 3.5 miles up the mountain. In the evening, he hiked 4.5 miles down the mountain. What was his overall change in altitude that day?

Jillian is playing a video game. In one scene, she loses 6.5 health points. In the next scene, she gains 8 health points. What is the overall increase or decrease to Jillian’s health points?

Additive Inverse The additive inverse is the opposite of a number. On a number line, the additive inverse has the same distance from zero, but lies in the opposite direction. The sum of a number and its additive inverse, or opposite is always zero.

At the start of summer, Joan got a haircut that took off 1.75 inches. By the end of summer, her hair had grown 1.75 inches. What is the overall increase or decrease to Joan’s hair in inches?

One week, Gerard wrote a check for $8.75, deposited $4.50, and wrote another check for $2.50. What was the change to Gerard’s bank account that week?
