Standout Technical Designers Presentation Outline Problem Statement/Constraints Design Options Design Selection Analysis Fabrication Testing Results Recommendation Concluding Remarks

Standout Technical Designers Problem Statement/Constraints 1) Problem Statement Design a new tape blade with a minimum standout of at least 10 ft while adhering to the defined problem constraints. 2) Problem Constraints Do not infringe on current patents <1.100’’ blade width (flattened) <0.0048’’ blade thickness Must fit within a 3.14’’x 3.14’’ x 1.9’ case Remain with 2x current blade cost Easy to use and lightweight Must be safe

Standout Technical Designers Design Options NumberCross SectionDiagram 1Original 2W Beam 3Original w/Holes 4 Original w/Bent Horizontal Edges 5Original w/Bent Flat Edges 6 Smaller Radius w/Bent Flat Edges Considered Design Cross Sections

Standout Technical Designers Design Selection Based on Combination of Ideas Utilizes Original Lufkin Dimensions - Requires Less Changes in Production Edges turned over - Double Thickness Flats Slots Cut Along Blade Length - First 2’ of Length -Diminishing Returns Coil Extendable Support - Coil wire attached to the blade

Standout Technical Designers Design Analysis 1)Material Removal: Shape: Circles Diameter size: 0.236’’ Distance between circles from center: 0.472’’ 2)Coiled Wire Support: Coil thickness: 0.04 Coil length: 3 ft Coil Material: 20 AWG Copper wire 3)Blade: Material: 1095 steel Blade length: 25 ft Width: ’’ Thickness: ’’

Standout Technical Designers Fabrication -The roller stand was designed to house both the male and female rollers used in the curve forming of the blade. -There are two four bolt flanged bearings supporting the axles of the two female rollers. -A hand crank is fitted to the axle of one of the female rollers. - 1 male and female roller manufactured due to cost

Standout Technical Designers Testing Results TrialStandout (Hook)Standout (Without Hook) 185"92" 284.5"92.25" "92.25" 1) Hook Test-Representation of how severely the hook weight affects the standout. TrialStandout (2' Slotted)Standout (3' Slotted) 195.5"96" 295.5"96" 395.5"96" 2) Holes punched Test-holes were ¼” in diameter & spaced ¼” apart. -The standout increased greatly for the first 2’ then remained essentially constant

Standout Technical Designers Testing Results TrialNew DesignOriginal w/point lbs0.510 lbs lbs0.490 lbs lbs0.510 lbs TrialLufkin(w/coil)Lufkin(w/o coil) 110 ft7.8 ft ft8 ft 3-- 3) Fold Edges Test- compared the original Lufkin blade with the new STD redesign using a 1 ft section loaded until failure. Failure was the amount of weight added to cause the blade to buckle. 4) Spring Coil Test- compared the original Lufkin blade with and without the coiled wire support. The coiled wire support was 3 ft in length. Failure was the measured distance until the blade broke over due to its own weight.
