Maritime Studies in London

It is important to start interest early with the right boats

“if you keep doing what you are doing, you will keep getting, what you have always got” Albert Einstein Except it is not enough to meet the skills shortage, …and the rules for vocational education in education have changed.

The existing level 2 and 3 Sailing and Water Sports BTECs are superb for generating the next generation of sailing instructors and captains. But the current sailing BTECS ….along with Maritime Skills Alliance qualifications are no longer approved by the DfE for school league tables.

Criteria reference To achieve the criteria the evidence must show that the learner is able to: Task no. Evidence P5 Explain the roles and responsibilities of different members of staff within a watersports centre 1,2 Worksheet / PowerPoint Presentation P6 Explain four different staff management techniques that a watersports manager could utilise 3 Written Report M3 Evaluate the effectiveness of staff management techniques that a watersports manager could use 3 Written Report Current level 3 Sailing BTEC assignment, taught alongside STCW, navigation, radio, RADAR and diesel engine courses at LNS

“We know that if we want to maintain our global status, we cannot solely celebrate what we have today – we have to create the tomorrow. “Seaborne trade will double over the next twenty years. We have to take a big slice of that pie. And to do that, we have to be prepared. We have to redouble our efforts to attract new people into this industry….” Maritime UK Chairman, Jeffrey Evans

If the Tideway Tunnel on its own is going to result in a 30% increase in river traffic – where is the workforce going to come from? If one of the new river cargo vessels or high speed passenger vessels needs repair or maintenance where and who will repair them? Who is going to build the next generation of greener river vessels? Norway already has all electric, car ferries Most of my maritime sixth form school leavers are snapped up by shipping companies.

If we want maritime futures for our children we need to lead in maritime education – but is the UK doing this?

High Tides App to share maritime education resources and best practice

Use of computer simulation engages students and facilitates maritime teaching in a class room environment.

Learning aims for the new Maritime BTEC The new level 2 Maritime BTEC would be a 150 guided learning hour course (150 GLH) Core units 90 Guided learning hours (GLH) Externally assessed 60 GLH Engineered world and physiology (rational: engineering knowledge plus sea survival and first aid) 30 GLH Maritime Sector overview.
