Facts to Know About the Hippo by William Dolan Facts to Know About the Hippo by William Dolan

Over the past mouth I have been researching about the hippo. I will teach you important facts about the hippo. You will learn what it looks like, where it lives, how it protects itself, and its enemies.

Physical Description

Habitat Do you know where the hippo lives? The hippo lives in plenty of water. They are found in grasslands, rivers and lakes. Things you will see in the hippo’s habitat are water, fish and grass. The hippo can survive here because it stays cool napping in the water. They usually eat at night. Also, webbed toes help them swim. The continent where the hippo can be found is Africa.

Defense Do you know how the hippo protects itself? One way the hippo protects its self is by showing its big teeth. This scares the predators. Another detail about the hippo defense is it stays alert for its baby. Finally the hippo slashes the other hippo with his tusks.

Prey Aump… Aump… Aump! The hippo is eating the grass. Hippos are herbivores. That means they eat only plants. Hippo can eat 88 pounds of food in an night.

Predators Swish…Swish…Swish. The baby calf is being eaten by a hyena! Adult hippos don’t have enemies, but calves do. Calves can’t protect themselves from hyenas, crocodiles, or lions. Crocodiles prey on calves on land and water. On land the lion kills calves. Hyenas hunt calves on land too.

Interesting Facts Here I will tell you some interesting facts about the hippo. They get sunburned easily. Another interesting fact is a cow is a bit smaller than a bull. Did you know a cow is a female and a bull is a boy? Finally, the largest hippo tusk were measured at 25 inches.

The hippo is a interesting animal to learn about. What do you know about the hippo?
