Habitat Do you know where the hippo lives? The hippo lives in plenty of water. They are found in grasslands, rivers and lakes. Things you will see in the hippo’s habitat are water, fish and grass. The hippo can survive here because it stays cool napping in the water. They usually eat at night. Also, webbed toes help them swim. The continent where the hippo can be found is Africa.
Defense Do you know how the hippo protects itself? One way the hippo protects its self is by showing its big teeth. This scares the predators. Another detail about the hippo defense is it stays alert for its baby. Finally the hippo slashes the other hippo with his tusks.
Prey Aump… Aump… Aump! The hippo is eating the grass. Hippos are herbivores. That means they eat only plants. Hippo can eat 88 pounds of food in an night.
Predators Swish…Swish…Swish. The baby calf is being eaten by a hyena! Adult hippos don’t have enemies, but calves do. Calves can’t protect themselves from hyenas, crocodiles, or lions. Crocodiles prey on calves on land and water. On land the lion kills calves. Hyenas hunt calves on land too.
