Consumers and Consumerism Chapter Eight

The worst crime against working people is a company which fails to operate at a profit. S. Gompers Labour Unions are the worst thing that ever struck the earth because they take away a man’s independence. H. Ford

MANAGEMENT

Mass production organized workers into teams so that production could be faster and more efficient. Capital and labour became separated. Now, one person provide funds (the capitalist) and the labour (the worker) and these two sides do not always agree

A labour movement includes all the organized activities which wage earners undertake to improve their own working conditions. This definition has several key points:

. -.

Collective Agreement Allows industry and union to deal with each other Labour-Relations Legislation Give workers freedom To organize and outlaws abusive practices Of employers. ?

How do modern Industries Work? Labour Relations are twofold 1. To monitor specific day to day relations with workers about salaries and wages 2.To set work schedules or assignments, lay-offs, discipline of disputes. 3.Unions have their own way of responding to the actions of the employers. They are known as Union Negotiators 4.If negotiations between labour and management breaks down, federal or state agencies appoint a mediator to assist both sides reach an agreement.

What is a Strike? Despite the best efforts of both labour and management, collective agreement can not be reached. 1.When this happen workers allowed to strike. 2.If resolution can not occur a binding arbitrator makes a decision that is binding and both parties must abide by it, whether they like it or not.
