Bell Ringer – 2/5/08 1.What was the goal of the Anaconda Plan? 2.Compare conditions for Civil War soldiers to the conditions of American soldiers in Iraq today 3.Explain why conscription angered many Southerners.

Conscription  Conscription is a draft into military service (forced men to be soldiers)  The Confederacy passed the first conscription in U.S. History due to decrease in volunteers  Exemptions made for plantation owners so that they could keep watch on the slaves & this angered poor Southerners

Capture of New Orleans  Union wanted control of the Mississippi River; needed to capture New Orleans to block Confederate shipments from the Gulf of Mexico  David Farragut commanded Union ships to open fire against Confederate ships  New Orleans surrendered; the Union gained 1,000 miles of river

Bell Ringer – 2/6/08 1.How did the Anaconda plan help the Union “suffocate” the Confederacy? 2.Why did the Union want to capture New Orleans? 3.What did David Farragut advise his men to do on the Mississippi River?

Emancipation Proclamation  Declared all slaves who lived in areas rebelling against the U.S. would be free  Signed by Lincoln in July 1862, but not revealed until Union victory at Antietam (Sept. 1862)

The 54 th Intantry  The Emancipation Proclamation encouraged & allowed African-Americans to join the Union Army  Most served in the 54 th Massachusetts Infantry  The 54 th took a key role in history when they captured Fort Wagner in S. Carolina

54 th Partner Activity  After completing the reading 54 th Infantry, create a memorial poem or memoir that would be appropriate to engrave on a plaque in South Carolina
