Royal Mail is running an amazing national letter writing competition for students under the age of 14 on 1 st September Royal Mail's Young Letter Writer Competition has been running for more than 37 years. The theme of the competition this year is 'What's your dream job?'.

Ask students to write a letter to an employer applying for their dream job. We'd like to know why it's their dream job and why they would be the right person for the job! Hurry, all competition entries must be received by 5pm on Friday 20th November 2015.

Young Letter Writer Competition £1,000 prizes for overall winners and their schools. Prizes will be awarded to both the shortlisted pupils and their schools in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and in each of the nine regions across England. In total, there are 60 prizes for both the under 11 and the 11 to under 14 age categories Overall winners will receive £1,000 in vouchers for their family, and £1,000 will be awarded to their school. Area winners and schools will each receive £200, and £40 will be awarded to both area runners up and their schools. Winners will be announced by 31st January 2016.

Starter What is your dream job and why? Make notes about why you would love to do your dream job. Who would be your employer? What skills do you have that would make an employer want to employ you? How could you persuade them that you are the best person for the job? What could you bring to the job that others couldn’t? What words best describe you? Hardworking? Committed? Good team worker? Able to use your initiative?

Main Task Write a letter using the plan below. Remember – this letter could win you £1000!

General Guidance Begin your letter ‘Dear Mr/Mrs/Ms ……’ if you know a person’s name, or ‘Dear Sir or Madam’ if you don’t know their name. Avoid inappropriate language such as slang. Use brief, informative sentences and short paragraphs. Refer to the position that you are applying for in the first sentence. Summarise your strengths, qualifications and experience or knowledge of the job you are going for. Be clear and positive about why you want the job. Outline the qualities and skills that you believe you can bring to the job or the organization.

Final Paragraph Express confidence in your ability to contribute to the success of the company, and indicate that you look forward to taking your application a step further at interview. Ending: Yours sincerely (if you do know the recipient’s name) Yours faithfully (if you don’t know the recipient’s name)
