Let’s Celebrate Jesus!

Right Mind?

“But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”” (John 4:23-24 ESV) Spirit = heart-felt emotions Truth = absolutes based on God’s word

“So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:1-4 ESV)

If indeed you have received exhortation, admonition, and encouragement from the life and words of Christ, comfort that results from God’s love, and your partnership with the Holy Spirit along with affection and sympathy

Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:1-4 ESV) Then be unified in mind and love, humbly looking to the significance and interests of others over yourself

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:4-8 ESV)

Was (hyparchō) = Christ preexisted. Jesus Christ did not begin in a Bethlehem manger. “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.” (Hebrews 1:1-2 ESV)

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:4-8 ESV) Form (morphe) = that nature, character, and substance that makes God, God! “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,” (Hebrews 1:3 ESV)

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:4-8 ESV) Made himself nothing (kenoo) = divest oneself of position, or to temporarily conceal His mode of being God, to reveal the mode of being man.

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:4-8 ESV) Servant (doulos) = “Bond Slave” – one who serves not out of obligation, but out of love.

“Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:4-8 ESV) Becoming obedient to the point of death = Christ submitted on to that which could not conquer Him without His permission!

“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11 ESV)

Highly exalted [huperupsoo: huper (over) + hupsoo (to lift up)] = “Super Exalted”

“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11 ESV) Name (onoma) = authority, character, rank, majesty, power, excellence, or anything else that the name covers, in other words, it expresses ones very attributes. “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Is 9:6 ESV) “On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.” (Rev 19:16 ESV)

“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11 ESV) Every knee should bow…every tongue confess = whenever the glory and presence of God is evident, the creature bows before Him. “By myself I have sworn; from my mouth has gone out in righteousness a word that shall not return: ‘To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear allegiance.’” (Is 45:23 ESV)

“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11 ESV) To the glory of God the Father = the unity between the Father and Son is so great that when you praise, honor, adore, and glorify the Lord Jesus Christ, you also glorify the Father! “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?” (John 14:9 ESV)

1. Mind of Christ = undivided resolve, pursue and accomplish the Father will, which means to diligently do His commands. 2. Love of Christ = to sacrificially give ourselves not only to those that love us, but our enemies as well. 3. Humility of Christ = to unselfishly humble ourselves to the point of regarding others as more important than we are. Our focus changes from our own personal interests, to the interests of others.

“Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:12-13 ESV)

Work out = the sanctifying work of the Spirit is conforming those God chose into the image of Christ. The work that we do is to think and act like Christ more and more, as we submit to the sanctifying process. “But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.” (2Th 2:13 ESV)

“Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:12-13 ESV) Ultimately, it is God who is working in us to provide the “want to” and “ability to” do what pleases Him.
