Reproduction in Yeasts

1.How do yeasts reproduce? Yeasts reproduce by carrying out a process of cell division called budding

2. What is budding? Budding is a form of asexual reproduction

3. What does asexual reproduction mean? Only one parent is involved, no sex cells are made and no genetic information is exchanged. Offspring are genetically identical ‘clones’ of the parent cell.

4. How does budding occur? A small outgrowth (bud) forms on the parent cell. A copy of the parents genetic material is made. It moves into the bud which detaches and the small bud grows.

5. How quickly does budding occur? Under ideal conditions (enough food, warmth and moisture) a yeast cell can reproduce by budding every two to three hours.

6.What are the advantages of this kind of reproduction? Asexual reproduction allows a yeast population to grow rapidly when environmental conditions are suitable.

7. What are the disadvantages of this kind of reproduction? Because the entire population may be genetically identical it can not adapt to changing environmental conditions

8. Which picture doesn’t represent budding?
