 Philosophy Enquiry Based Learning 10 th Feb 2012 – 9 th March 2012

Aims for the next 5 weeks  To understand and apply ethical theories to educational contexts  To appreciate the role of online collaboration in a new context  To learn new skills of website construction  To consider the perspectives of educators, but also students in ethical dilemmas

Producing Ethical Advice for Educators  During this EBL students will be given a range of ethical dilemmas from educational contexts.  In groups, students will analyse the ethical issues.  Groups will then develop a wikispace website that is designed to give ethical advice for educators to manage this situation effectively.  These websites will then be peer-reviewed and updated accordingly

Ethical Scenarios – an example  Two of your academically weaker Year 12 students, Jack and Michelle, have recently shown a marked improvement in concentration, factual recall and ability in class. During a routine locker inspection empty packets of Provigil were found in one of these students locker’s. You know that neither students suffers from sleep problems. Provide guidance which would help practising teachers to manage this situation effectively.

Example Wikispace Wikispaces are basically websites that any user can edit. They can include text, audio/video clips, links to other pages and a lot more. There are lots of examples of educational wikispaces on the web:

Philosophy Block - EBL Week 1Week 2Week 3Week 4Week 5 Intro to Wikispaces Recap of Ethics and Intro to dilemmas Independent development of Wikispace Independent reviewing of another Wikispace Review of the Ethics project Students are assigned to an IT lab for 1 hour Session begins with introduction to overall project Work through wikispaces worksheet with tutor Meet in usual EBL classroom with tutor Work through ethical theory with tutor Introduction to ethical dilemmas Discuss in groups how to structure Wikispace which will provide guidance to teachers Work independently of tutor, but in groups to develop a single wikispace that provides guidance for teachers Tutors are available for drop- in discussion of issues Students work independently to review (and perhaps update) each others wikispace Each EBL team member will be responsible for reviewing the wikispace from another group Those reviews will be posted (on Wiki discussion) Meet in usual EBL classroom with tutor Consider some reviews from the class Review the process of EBL Discuss online collaboration and teamwork – what works; what doesn’t

TODAY (10/2/12) – Wikispaces  Work through the handout by sections – the tutor will guide you through the elements on the page.  The task has been structured to ensure each step is as clear as possible  Please help each other if you are finding any section tricky – hopefully there are people around you willing to give you advice  If you are able to add extra elements to your pages during the session then by all means to do, but ensure you do this after the basic structures are in place.

Step 1: Wikispaces  Go to  Select ‘Wikis for Individuals and Groups (on the right)  Create an account. You will need:  A username  YOU MUST USE YOUR STUDENTID AS YOUR USERNAME  A password  An account  YOU MUST USE YOUR HOPE ACCOUNT FOR THIS  You should be taken now to your wikispaces account homepage.  You should also have an from Wikispaces asking you to confirm your account which you need to do.
