Presentation transcript:

November 5 and 6, 2013 I can Revise a text in order to create cohesive meaning. (Bell Ringer) I can identify and create active and passive voice. (Grammar) I can analyze a speech for effective persuasive techniques: ethos, pathos, logos, thesis, claim, counter claim, active/passive voice. (Speech Analysis)

ACT Bell Ringer Read the questions and all the answer options. Read the passage carefully. Answer questions on your bell ringer sheet AND explain why you chose that answer. Place this under the bell ringer section in your binder.

Number 70 He linked and combined theory and practice by saying that interpretation of an observed phenomenon must always be made in light of its purpose. F. No Change G. combining H. to combine J. OMIT

Answer J) The original is needlessly wordy. ◦ Link and combine both have the meaning “to join”, so we do not need both words.

Number 71 He linked and combined theory and practice by saying that interpretation of an observed phenomenon must always be made in light of its purpose. A. No Change B. Always keeping its purpose in mind C. Without ever forgetting what its purpose is D. Given an understanding of what its purpose is

Answer A) The original is correct. The other choices are needlessly wordy and awkward.

Grammar: Active/Passive Voice Voice is a verb form that indicates if the sentence's subject performs or receives an action. 2 Types of Voice: ACTIVE: If the sentence's subject performs the action, the sentence is written in the active voice. ◦ Example:"The pilot landed the plane" is written in the active voice since the subject (pilot) performed the action (landed the plane). PASSIVE: If the sentence's subject receives the action, the sentence is written in the passive voice. ◦ Example: "The plane was landed by the pilot" is written in the passive voice since the subject (plane) received the pilot's action (landed the plane).

Active/Passive Activity A few students at a time will have a sentence strip and we, as a class, will have to place the students in the correct order.

Active/Passive Practice Complete the handout on your own paper. This should title Active/Passive Voice and complete under your notes of active/passive voice. Write the subject and then identify if the sentence is active or passive.

Check your answers Remember- you are creating your study guide for your grammar test. Go ahead and change any you might have missed. Put this in your binder, so you have the study guide.
