REAL NUMBERS Lesson 5: Ordering Real Numbers

WARM UP

ORDERING NUMBER ON A NUMBER LINE We usually order numbers in ASCENDING ORDER – from smallest to biggest. Every now and again they might ask for DESCENDING ORDER – from biggest to smallest.

Before you begin, take down these notes…… 1.Take all the numbers you have been given and separate them into positive and negative numbers. 2.Convert all of the numbers to the same form. (decimal form) 3.Compare the decimal places. 4.Write the numbers in order from least to greatest or greatest to least. 5.Put the numbers on the number line.

l l l l l l l l l l l l l Example 1: 1 1.Convert all the numbers to the same form – use decimals. 2.Compare the decimal places. 3.Write the numbers in order from least to greatest. 4.Put the numbers on the number line. 1 (1.0)

l l l l l l l l l l l l l Example 2: Convert all the numbers to the same form – use decimals. 2.Compare the decimal places. 3.Write the numbers in order from least to greatest. 4.Put the numbers on the number line. 3.25

Let’s practice this example together. Record ALL this information in the notes section of your binder.

CLASSWORK Complete the ordering worksheet. Show all your work. You may work with a partner. You may not use a calculator.

Complete the ORDERING RATIONAL NUMBERS worksheet. You must work for at least 30 minutes. You must show all your work for full credit. You MAY NOT use a calculator. REMEMBER: TEST ON 16 SEPTEMBER 2014
