Outline What is a computer? What components does a computer need? Physical “Cloud” What is a virtual computer?

What is a computer? Your thoughts….

What is a computer? So says Wikipedia: “A computer is a general purpose device that can be programmed to carry out a finite set of arithmetic or logical operations.” Note: It doesn’t mention networking, internet, world wide web, etc

What is a computer? My definition: A device that can have programmable pieces of software that will execute upon a set, or series of, hardware components Bottom-line It’s hardware and software a user may leverage to have desired affects take place

What is a computer? Input/ Output Software Hardware

What components does a computer need? Physical Components HDD Optical Drive Processors (Central and Graphics) Memory External Storage Devices Peripherals (Monitors, Keyboard, Mice, etc) Kickin’ it old school: Floppy Drives, Laser Disks, Tape Drives, Punch Cards, etc

In recent years a “new concept” of “cloud computing” has been revitalized The cloud leverages a central, external set of capabilities (processing, storage, etc) that can be accessed from nearly any Internet connected device “Cloud” Components Internet Internet Browser Customized lightweight software (e.g. streaming, collaboration) As seen in Google, Apple, Netflix, and other products What components does a computer need?

What is a virtual computer? Your thoughts….

What is a virtual computer? It’s a computer running within a computer

What is a virtual computer? Keywords Host Machine The physical hardware upon which a virtual computer may execute Virtual Machine A single instance of a virtual computer Also known as a VM Hypervisor The software needed to allow pass through of a VM to a Host Machine’s Hardware

What is a virtual computer? Key to success: The Hypervisor It allows for pass through of virtual computing operations in a host machine OS to physical components VMWare Hypervisor Example Virtual Box Hypervisor Example

Example pass through of VM’s to a Host Machine’s Hardware Host Machine VM’s
