Biography Born Andre Friedmann Oct 22, 1933, In Austria, Hungary. Died May 24,1954 in Thai, Binh State of vietnam at the age of 40. Parents: Dezso and Julia Friedmann-Berkovits. Left home at the age of 18 because there was little hope after world war 1. Wanted to be a writer but found work in photography in Berlin and grew up to love the art. In 1933 he moved from Germany to France because of Nazism and persecution of Jewish photographers. He had to get rid of the Jewish name “Friedman” and named himself “Robert Capa” His nickname in school was “Capa” which meant shark and also sounded American. Known for war photography.
