Anabaptist belief in Voltaire’s Candide IEP12 Jennifer Mr. deGroof

Introduction to Anabaptist Definition of an Anabaptist: one who baptizes again Misnomer Oppose infant baptism and believe baptism in adulthood is the true baptism Some regard it as radical protestants ✖ Persecuted by both Protestants and Catholics

Origin (Monogenesis) 1. Monogenesis (Harold Bender & Robert Friedmann): Took place in Zürich, Switzerland on January 21, 1525 Radical reformers such as Felix Manz, Conrad Grebel and George Blaurock thought reforms made by Ulrich Zwingli were too slow → broke from Ulrich Zwingli Spread to southern Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands

Origin (Polygenesis) 2. Polygenesis (Werner Packull): more widely accepted Took place in 3 separate, independent places (Switzerland, South-Germany Austria and the Netherlands) on February 24, 1527 Switzerland: “humanistic Swiss concentration on the outer, written word” South-Germany Austria: “revelation through the inner word”

Basic Beliefs 1. A high view of the Bible 2. Emphasis on the New Testament 3. Emphasis on Jesus as central to all else 4. The necessity of a believers' church 5. The importance of discipleship 6. Insistence on a church without classes or divisions.

Basic Beliefs 7. Belief in the church as a covenant community 8. Separation from the world 9. The church as a visible counterculture 10. Belief that the gospel includes a commitment to the way of peace modelled by the Prince of Peace 11. Commitment to servanthood 12. Insistence on the church as a missionary church

Anabaptist society now 1. Mennonites Hopewell Mennonite Church: Bible doctrine ➣That God has revealed Himself in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament, the inspired Word of God, and supremely in His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ (2 Timothy 3:16; Hebrews 1:1,2). ➣That the Church and state are two separate organizations with separate responsibilities and functions. That the government is ordained of God to maintain order in society, while the mission of the Church in the world is to glorify God and lead others to faith and trust in Him (John 15:19; 17:11-16). ➣That the Church is the body of Christ, the brotherhood of the redeemed, a disciplined people obedient to the Word of God, and a fellowship of love, intercession, and healing (1 Corinthians 3:16; Ephesians 2:11-22; 1 Peter 2:9). ➣That Christians should not be conformed to the world, but should seek to conform to the will of God in every area of life (2 Corinthians 6:14-18; Romans 12:1,2; Matthew 6:25-34; John 17:11-16).
