Let There Be Symbolism! Copyright 2008 PresentationFx.com | Redistribution Prohibited | Image © 2008 Thomas Brian | This text section may be deleted for presentation.PresentationFx.com A symbol is something that is concrete (something that you can touch) that stands for something that is abstract (a feeling, an idea, or an emotion).

Examples (almost everywhere you look!) A dove implies a connection to peace. Heart = love White = purity or goodness American flag = American freedom and democracy

While you read... you will often find symbols that the author has strategically placed to deepen the meaning of the text; this is called symbolism. What can symbols be? The symbols themselves can be objects, actions, and even the characters themselves become symbols – standing for good or evil, for instance. Regardless of the symbol and whether it is abstract or literal, symbolism adds another dimension to writing.

CAHSEE Practice Question True or False. Symbolism is an abstract object that stands for something that is concrete. A True B False

Analysis The correct answer is B, false. Read the question carefully. The terms abstract and concrete are reversed.
