SINET Update and Collaboration with TEIN2 Jun Matsukata National Institute of Informatics (NII) Research Organization of Information and Systems August 25, 2005

SINET and SuperSINET NII operates SINET and SuperSINET which serve as the information communications network infrastructure for the national research and higher education community in Japan. SINET with SuperSINET together plays the role of an NREN in Japan.

SINET SINET serves as the information communication network infrastructure for the research community in Japan covering the higher educational community as well for many years. Universities and academic research institutions are connected.

SuperSINET SuperSINET is a networking project associated with SINET which was aimed at promotion of advanced scientific researches. SuperSINET is integrated with SINET as a single operation entity. Two modes of network services Shared backbone (IP packet switched) Dedicated Physical (Gitabit Ethernet bridge circuits, etc.) Virtual (MPLS VPN (L3))

SuperSINET (continued) First phase: from Janurary 2002 to March 2005 SuperSINETwas implemented through a three+ year joint research project with the awarded telecommunication company. Second phase: from April 2005 SuperSINET uses commercially available telecommunication circuits.

Topology of the Backbone Network of SINET/SuperSINET SuperSINET Nodes (PoPs) SINET Nodes (PoPs) OsakaNagoya Tokyo As of April 2005

Recent changes Circuit renewal of the backbone of SINET and SuperSINET Due to the transition from phase 1 to phase 2 International connectivity Backup of the transpacific portion of APAN Upgrade of the circuit to Thailand Upgrade of connectivity to U.S.A.

Circuit renewal of SINET and SuperSINET. Completed by April 2005 Although most circuits were replaced, there was no remarkable change in topology. Backup of the links to major network nodes using Gigabit Ethernet clouds.

International connectivity December 2004 SINET started to provide backup for the transpacific portion of APAN (i.e. TransPac2). January 2005 The 2 Mbps link to Bangkok, Thailand was upgraded to 44 Mbps (ATM), connecting SINET (NII) and ThaiSARN (NECTEC) as before. April 2005 OC48 (2.4 Gbps) x 4 to NYC became OC192 (10 Gbps). A new OC48 link to LA was installed.

10Gbps International Connectivity QGPOP APAN GÉANT SURFNET KOREN Fukuoka Otemachi As of April 2005 MAN LAN NYC ThaiSARN SINET/ SuperSINET NII Hitotsubashi LA Abilene CANARIE ESnet ISP (for commodity traffic) NISN Pacific Wave STARLIGHT Chicago 2.4Gbps

Upcoming and Future Issues Design of next generation architecture of SINET Two new intra-Asia links to be installed

Two New Intra-Asia Links Two OC12 (622 Mbps) intra-Asia links, between Tokyo and Hong Kong and between Tokyo and Singapore, will be installed by January 1, Will form a part of the TEIN2 backbone. Will be operated by NII in collaboration with TEIN2 as well as APAN.
