Evaluating the Value of WBT: Learner’s Perspective
Presentation transcript:

Translating the future: Team Enhanced Creativity approach to harnessing technology for learning John Cook Centre Manager

e-learning future The futures we inherit are not of our own making, but the futures we create for generations of learners arise out of our ability to imagine a better world. (Paraphrasing Henry Giroux)

Translating the future can be tricky! I think there is a world market for maybe five computers (Thomas Watson, chairman of IBM in 1943 )

Working in teams can be tricky!! Getting academics together to work on e-learning has sometimes been said to be like trying to herding cats

Recognising creativity can be tricky!!! We don't like their sound, and guitar music is on the way out (Decca Recording to the Beatles when rejecting them in 1962 )

TEC involves 6 phases 1.Agree contract 2.Ensure Head of Department was on board 3.Brainstorming at Wolfson 4.Ongoing team meetings 5.Incorporating student and tutor (user) feedback into design 6.Summative evaluation

Student feedback 100% interactivity 100% access anytime 93% access anywhere 93% working at my own speed 80% assessment/self-test exercises 67% audio/commentary 60% thought the visual components were important

Student feedback I don't think I would change anything. Everything fits perfectly. I enjoyed the learning objects very much. For me it’s just perfect. I really can't think of anything better!!! I think they are great, no need of improving. I was completely content with everything. I even improved my IT knowledge. Very good learning tool that helped me a lot. Is really good that you can access information online! It improves learning very much!!

Feedback from HoD Debbie Holley presented the suite of Reusable Learning Objects developed and evaluated with students to a recent Departmental Management Team meeting. Head of Department, Bob Morgan commented: “ As a department we are very keen to promote cutting edge technological research activities, and students and tutors are to be commended on their work.”

Outputs Outputs so far include (see Dissemination section in TEC Report): 6 refereed papers/symposium 17 invited talks And the future …
