Unit 20: Music and Sound for the Moving Image Structures: storyboard; internal structure; pace; edits; titles Task: You have been asked to create a audio/visual presentation that analyses a range of moving image based material (movie, trailers, TV ads ,etc) identifying audio and visual elements. Your presentation should address the following features: Audio components: music; atmospheres; sound effects; voice tracks; temp tracks Visual components: animations; live footage; stills; logos and titles Structures: storyboard; internal structure; pace; edits; titles

Storyboard What is a storyboard? A Storyboard is a sequence of images which is used for planning and showing directions throughout the film. This is my example of a ‘Storyboard’ It shows the actions that is happening throughout the cartoon. It has a duration on each scene. Also it’s labeled alphabetically and numerically. It shows the movement of characters by pointing arrows at different locations.

Complete your storyboard for the clip linked below (write down the time your clip starts) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IT6j4_JyqI The introduction to the clip. The title ‘Clip #2 “Car Chase” `TRT 1:02’ Multiple character’s having a car chase. Both main character’s trying to lose the Police Officers in a car chase. Both main character’s decided to hide in a alley in a chance of losing the Police. A option in a car which activated the ‘lift’ mode which was used to escape the alley from multiple character’s chasing the main character’s The Police Officers caught up with the main characters. More character’s caught up with the main characters, leaving them pathless and surrounded.

Complete your storyboard for the clip linked below (write down the time your clip starts) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IT6j4_JyqI Both main character’s looking down whilst using the ’lift’ mode in the car. A under-car view of the crashing scene. A scene just before the the Police Officers and other character’s crash, whilst their eyes are popping out, showing they’re scared. After the crash, both Police Officer’s fly off their Motorcycles and fall on the floor. Both main-character’s driving into a bridge unintentionally. Both main-character’s landing safely on-top of the bridge and driving off.

Pace What is pace? Pace is the rate of change in a film clip. For example, speed of music (tempo), cuts in the film and camera angles. Find an example of a slow paced clip. How is this different? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YGfrGKK9Mo There was only a few camera angles throughout the whole scene, the character’s didn’t perform much movement except the ‘arm-spreading’ and ‘embracing’ part and the tempo of the music was slow which perfectly matched the scene. Looking back at the previous clip, this one is slow-paced along with a Romantic piece which plays along the scene to create a enlightening atmosphere, the camera-angles were sustained for a longer duration, some camera-angles were involved movement, sliding down to show the ‘Titanic’ is moving creating a great amount of force.

Internal Structure: Internal Structure is a change in atmosphere both in the scene and music at the same time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5VHRcUa0k8 This video shows toys about to get incinerated, but before that happens, they were saved by a giant metal claw which was controlled by the toy aliens. The part when the toys fell in the incinerator, dramatic music was played but as soon as the giant metal claw caught them and saved them, music changed, swapping the instrumentation and changing the dynamics.

Edits What is editing in film music? When music is changed to reflect on the scene. How has editing been used in this film clip? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2Ecwm7Alrc The music in this clip was altered which reflects the scene in the film, at the start of the clip there was some music played in the background creating a relaxed atmosphere but as soon as the shot changed to show the shark’s point of view and the shark getting closer to his victim, the music changed, building-up to create tension. Why have the edits been done in this way? The film and music have been edited in this way in order to highlight the action in the clip, to show the audience something is coming to disturb the relaxed atmosphere which was created at the start of the clip, creating a dramatic effect.

Titles What are titles? Why are they important? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWEPGNjDi1M What are titles? The titles show the name of the film, production companies, main cast members, director and important people. Why are they important? The titles introduce the audience to the film, they’re normally presented to set a scene. How are they used in this clip? This clips used multiple animations to introduce the producers and everyone else to contributed in creating this film, the animations shown in the introduction gave a slight summary of the previous 007 movies which gave away what you should expect.

Unit 20: Music and Sound for the Moving Image Visual components: animations; live footage; stills; logos and titles Task: You have been asked to create a audio/visual presentation that analyses a range of moving image based material (movie, trailers, TV ads ,etc) identifying audio and visual elements. Your presentation should address the following features: Audio components: music; atmospheres; sound effects; voice tracks; temp tracks Visual components: animations; live footage; stills; logos and titles Structures: storyboard; internal structure; pace; edits; titles

Animation What is animation? An animation is a collection of images played at a fast rate to create a illusion that there’s movement happening in the clip. How has animation been used in the clips you have seen? The character, Roger Rabbit has been placed in a physical plane and animated over to create a illusion he’s interacting with characters from the physical. What type of music and sound effects can be used alongside an animation? A type of sound effects which is suited for children, voice overs and comedic type of sound effects can be used to give a impression for children that a cartoon character exists within the movie.

Live footage What is live footage? How is this different to animation? A live footage is a unedited and altered material caught in live action. How is this different to animation? Live footage is a view on the current scene which are happening while the footage is playing, a animation is collection of frames which is used to create a illusion of movement. What type of productions use live footage? A type of production which would use live footage would be: Live Shows, News, Streaming (YouTube) What type of productions use both animation and live footage together? The first clip, Roger Rabbits is a clip which involves both live footage and animations. It shows interaction between one live footage character and an animated character.

Stills What is a still? Where would a still be used in a production? A still is a photograph taken on/off set of the movie during production. Where would a still be used in a production? A still would be used on the side when a certain moment in a movie happens which should be captured by the camera. Can you give an example of a still being used in a production? A still can be used to highlight certain moments within the film. A still creates different effects depending on the situation, it represents the movie showing what it’s going to be about and what to expect.

Logos and Titles What are logos? Where are these used within a film? A logo is a image/text which represents a Film/TV productions to introduce their producers or name. Where are these used within a film? Logo’s are usually used in introductions before the film starts. What different logos appear within a film? Logo’s of company which sponsors the movie, the name of the movie and within the movie itself. Can you give any examples of a logo? Pixar Warner Home Video 20th Century Fox Paramount Disney

Examples of Movie/Film logo’s

Unit 20: Music and Sound for the Moving Image Audio components: music; atmospheres; sound effects; voice tracks; temp tracks Task: You have been asked to create a audio/visual presentation that analyses a range of moving image based material (movie, trailers, TV ads ,etc) identifying audio and visual elements. Your presentation should address the following features: Audio components: music; atmospheres; sound effects; voice tracks; temp tracks Visual components: animations; live footage; stills; logos and titles Structures: storyboard; internal structure; pace; edits; titles

Sound Effects What are sound effects? Sound effects are artificially created sounds or music used to film or any other broadcast production. Find an example of Foley sounds and discuss how they are used. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyfH9t8JAuo Foley sounds are sound effects added to the movie in-order to enhance the sound of the original during post-production. The YouTube link of a film clip demonstrates how vital Foley is to enhance the audio of a Film/TV production. The list below highlights that in a space of a minutes about 11 Foley sounds have been used. The ‘foot-steps’ (0:31) The ‘door-close ‘ (1:16) The ‘gas-leak’ (0:32) The ‘opening-door’ (1:10) The ‘metal-hitting’ (0:06) The ‘glass-break’ (0:10) The ‘scrubbing’ (0:03) The ‘head-hit’ (0:48) The ‘falling-items (0:00) The ‘kicking-item’ (0:23) The ‘wiping-hands-on-clothes’ (0:27) Find an example of Background sounds and discussed how they are used. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anV4-aq6P8s The Background sounds are a sound which fills-in the noise level in a Film/TV to make it sound more realistic. The YouTube link of a sound effect demonstrates how vital Background is to create a realistic atmosphere in a Film/TV production.

Sound Effects Find an example of hard sound effects (cars, sirens, gunfire) and discuss how they are used. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8J0Ib8Dt9M Hard sound effects are added to the movie in-order to create tension in the atmosphere. The YouTube link of a film clip demonstrates hard sound effects being used. Here’s a list of few sound effects which I picked up from the clip: ‘bullets-rebelling-off-the-bullet-proof-car’ ‘gun-shots’ ‘explosions’ ‘helicopter’ ‘engine-growling’ ‘phone-ringtone’ ‘missile-shot’ Find an example of designed effects (that don’t usually occur in nature – Sci Fi.) Discuss how they are used. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh4l39Lo194 Designed sound effects are added to the movie in-order to create a unrealistic impression. The YouTube link of a film clip demonstrates designed sound effects being used. ‘door-opening’ ‘lightsaber-extraction’ ‘lightsaber-waving’ ‘lightsaber-clashing’ ‘barrier-activation’ ‘barrier-deactivation’ ‘force’

Temp Tracks What are temp tracks? Discuss how they are used. A temp tracks are already existing audio which can be used as a guideline for a certain style. A director might use temp tracks in-order to give the composer a idea of what type of genre or style of music they’re looking for.

Voice Tracks What are voice tracks and how are they used in over dubbing? A voice track is a recording of voices within the film. Over-dubbing is layering in voices that are not recorded in the original filming. For example, over-dubbing can be used to enhance the voice tracks also used to translate instead of using subtitles. English Subtitles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZX7XByndoWY Here’s the original version of the voice tracks. English Over-Dubbed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WP5jdcU4SU Here’s a example of a Japanese Animation which is translated into English (Overdubbed)

Music Why do we have music in films? To create a suiting atmosphere which relates to the film, and enhances the feeling to the film informing the audience that there’s a change atmosphere and environment. How can music effect a film. Find examples https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IT6j4_JyqI The Roger Rabbit clip shows that when the situation changes within the film, the music follows and recreates the feeling in the movie which suits the current scene. The music was in an orchestral style. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oPoRlBlfpA The Pompeii film clip shows a disaster happening, and a couple getting absorbed within it while kissing, the instrumentation and dynamic changed as soon as both character’s starting kissing, the music was dramatic showing that both character’s are about to die. How does music create atmosphere? It adds a effect which enhances the scene making the audience feel differently depending on the scene.

Music What is diegetic and non diegetic music? Find examples and discuss. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=276mzf_Go8U Diegetic means audio which actually exists within the film. For example, the Top Gun clip, the music within the movie is played and noticed by the character showing that the audio within the movie is Diegetic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IT6j4_JyqI Non-Diegetic means audio which doesn’t actually exists within the film. For example, the Roger Rabbit clip, the music which enhances the scene is the music which doesn’t actually exist within the movie.

Music What are micky mousing and hit points. Find example. Micky mousing is music that is synchronized with the animation or scene. Hit points are when during the scene there’s a sudden change music or when you want something in the footage to be emphasized by the music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_XX9c90PFQ This clip shows that the actions within the animation are synchronized with the music, which gives every single movement a sound. This clip shows that some movements are emphasized by sounds.

Leitmotifs What are leitmotifs? How are they used? Find an example. A Leitmotif is a piece of music which belongs to a certain character within the movie and is only played during a scene when the character comes on screen or the director wants the audience to think of the character. This often happens with films that have a superhero, villain, etc. For example, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZsqdTrr1eM The Pink Panther clip shows the Leitmotifs being used when you see Pink Panther on-screen.
