Networking Basics Objectives: 1. Utilize appropriate vocabulary to communicate effectively in a technological society. 6. Describe uses of a networked computer. 7. Network Adaptor In order for networking to work you need a network adaptor. A network adaptor is a piece of hardware to plug cables in. It sends and receives information through these cables. The network adaptor is a network interface card.

Advantages to using a network Networks allow you to share resources like files and software. Networks allow people to work quickly, easily, and efficiently since everyone has access to the network files.

Share Hardware Networks allow users to share hardware and this saves money. Networks allow the sharing of printers and copiers.

Types of Networks LAN: Local Area Network WAN: Wide Area Network

LAN Covers a small geographic area like a school or office building. Devices are connected with hubs and switches that allow you to transport information from 1 computer to another. Creates an Intranet where a group of resources on the LAN are available to people only on that network

Server A server is a computer that allows these shared resources to the network. There are several different kinds of servers – Mail server – Print server – Web server – File server

Client A computer that accesses the files on the servers is a client.

WAN WAN is wide area network. It covers a large area of several miles. It connects a single computer to a network or more WANs together. Usually uses a network adaptor to do this

Router A router is a device that directs information to the correct network. Routers allow areas to be wireless. Where are a few wireless places in Mobile?
