(direct object) __Insert Subject + Avt + Direct Object_ to whom or for whom? (indirect object) If the verb has a direct object, the verb is TRANSITIVE. If the verb DOES NOT have a direct object, the verb is INTRANSITIVE. If the verb is NOT an action verb, ask the following: Is there a word in the predicate that equals or describes the subject? If so, the verb is LINKING. If there is a word that equals the subject, that word is the predicate nominative. If there is a word that describes the subject, that word is the predicate adjective.
