If you don’t have your book today, don’t sweat it; however, bring your book from here on out until told otherwise. Remember: You get 5 points off for not bringing your textbook!
STANDARDS Reading 3.12: Analyze the way in which a work of literature is related to the themes and issues of its historical period.
Reading is like a sport– the more you practice good techniques, the easier it gets! Since the course will require you to read somewhat challenging texts, let’s review some good active reading techniques.
Technique #1: When reading in class, ALWAYS follow along with BOTH your ears and eyes.
Technique #2: If you don’t understand a word, look it up (…or ask ).
Technique #3: Stop often to think about what you are reading. Don’t rush through the text. While stories are amusing, they are usually also teaching you something important; reading ONLY for amusement will cause you to miss out on valuable learning!
Technique #4: Make notes about the text. This is also called annotating the text. Write down questions, summarize difficult parts, underline important parts, write down bigger ideas, etc.
Together, we will read “Eveline” by James Joyce– Ireland’s greatest writer (pg. 1166). Annotations due Wednesday.
