Campus Data Summit 2013 University of Alberta Data Stewardship: Institutional Responsibilities

Data stewardship  This year’s focus on data stewardship explores the various roles that institutions play across jurisdictions in the management and preservation of research data, drawing upon the experiences and lessons of research in the North and the Arctic.  We will be looking at institutional roles from the standpoint of three themes: data policies, data infrastructure, and collaborations.institutional rolesthree themes 2

Definitions  Managing research data entails the many activities dealing with the operational support of data across the stages of the research lifecycle, that is, the “what” and “how” of research data.  Data Stewardship is about the identity of those responsible for ensuring data management activities are performed to best practice levels and standards across the complete lifecycle. This addresses “who” is responsible for specific data activities. Data Stewardship 3

The context  Research is organized and conducted at the project level, yet this work takes place within the context of larger institutions.  One of the challenges we face today is clearly delineating data stewardship responsibilities between the project and institutional levels. 4

Program format  A goal of the Data Summit is to establish an open and ongoing conversation on campus among researchers, administrators, and service providers about research data management and preservation.  The use of panels in this year’s program is intended to generate a wider discussion on data topics.  Panels have been assembled on each of the three themes and the panelists have been asked them to speak for ten to twelve minutes on the theme from their perspective. Reactions from the other panel members will then be requested before opening the discussion to those attending the session. 5
