About Your muscles

MUSCULAR SYSTEM TRIVIA w If you weigh 120 pounds, approximately how much of the weight is muscle?

Approximately 50 pounds

MUSCLE TISSUE- 3 Types w SKELETAL- attached to bone, voluntary, striated (because of stripes & striae) w CARDIAC- heart muscle w SMOOTH- nonstriated, involuntary, found in visceral(organs) and blood vessel walls

FUNCTION OF MUSCLES- to contract and lengthen w SKELETAL MUSCLE FUNCTION 1) MOVEMENT 2) POSTURE- MUSCLE TONE 3) HEAT PRODUCTION

MOVEMENT w Muscles move bones by pulling on them, shortening and contracting. w The muscle that BENDS the joint is called the FLEXOR. The muscle that straightens the joint is called the EXTENSOR muscle.

MOVEMENTS w Flexion- movement that makes a joint angle smaller w Extension- movement that makes joint angle larger

More movements w Abduction- moving body part away from the midline; “abduct” w Adduction- moving body part toward the midline; “add”

ROTATION w Moving around longitudinal axis example: “shaking your head no”

Do you remember the muscles you labeled last week?
