Job Requirements Ophthalmologists need extensive training after high school. Four years of college or four years of medical school, one year of internship, and three years of training as hospital residents in ophthalmology. After their internships, students take a series of exams to become licensed to practice general medicine. After their residencies, ophthalmologists must pass exams and other requirements for certification in their specialty.
