Signal for Quiet There will be times in class when I need everyone’s attention. I will hit the chime when I need your attention. When you hear the chime I expect you to be: 1.Quiet 2.Sitting still 3.Looking at me

Break Spot There may be times during class when I ask you to take a break. The break spot is for someone who has made a mistake, broken a rule, or simply needs a few minutes to collet his/herself. It is NOT a punishment! If you are sent to the break spot, you will have time to think about: Why am I here? What should I do differently when I return? Once you have gathered your thoughts you will be welcomed back into the group.

Bathroom Procedure: It is important for you to be in class the entire time. If you must leave to go to the bathroom, give me the bathroom signal. I will either ask you to wait or tell you to go. Best times to go to the bathroom: Group work time Individual work time Worst time to go to the bathroom: Whole group instruction

Pencils: You are expected to bring a pencil to class. If you do not have one, take one from the “sharpened” cup. At the end of class, return it to either the “sharpened” or “unsharpened” cup. Best times to sharpen your pencil: Warm Ups Individual work time Group work time Worst times to sharpen your pencil: During a lesson/whole group activities When the teacher is talking When a student is talking to the class

Cell Phones: Leave your cell phones in your lockers—if we use technology I will let you know ahead of time!

When the teacher or a student is talking: When the teacher or a student is talking to the entire group you are expected to be listening respectfully. This means you are: Seated Quiet Looking at the speaker Raising your hand if you have a question

Share your nametag! Turn and Talk! There will be times in class when I will ask you to turn and talk to your neighbor. During this time you should: 1.Compare answers on the question/topic I gave you 2.Ask questions about your partner’s opinion After a few minutes, I will call on students to share with the class. Nametags: 1.Something you love to do 2.Your favorite place on earth 3.A person who has taught you something 4.Your favorite historical figure or time period to study

Listen respectfully while your classmates introduce each other! What does listening respectfully look like? 1.Sit quietly 2.Look at the speaker 3.Raise your hand if you have a question Nametags: Something you love to do Your favorite place on earth A person who has taught you something Your favorite historical figure or time period to study

Interactive Notebook Guidelines Passer-outers please distribute papers When I am talking to the entire group you are expected to be listening respectfully. This means you are: Seated Quiet Looking at the speaker Raising your hand if you have a question

What is the purpose of the interactive notebooks? Our interactive notebooks will give you a place to learn history and illustrate your comprehension in creative ways. Our interactive notebooks will be used for class notes as well as for other activities where you will be asked to express your own ideas and to process the information

What materials am I required to bring? Spiral notebook: 150 pages or more! 2 rolls of clear tape Colored pencils

Left and right sides: Left Side: assignmentRight Side: Class Notes

How will my notebook be graded? Notebook assignments will be graded at the end of each grading period. Points will be earned for completed work. All class notes and notebook assignments should be included even for the days when you were absent. An important part of your notebook is its VISUAL appearance. Your notebook is a reflection of you and your learning. It needs to be neat and well organized. Your artistic, creative touch should be visible throughout the notebook. Keep in mind that your notebook will be a significant part of your history grade each quarter. Put effort into it and you will be rewarded!

What happens if I am absent? If you are absent, it is your responsibility to obtain assignments from the class website or the teacher. All notebook pages will be in the crate near my desk

Homework Tonight: Bring “Interactive Notebook Guidelines” home, share with parents, bring back signed!

BINGO: Walk around the classroom, find people who have done things in the squares and have them sign/initial your paper. Winners: Round 1: Bingo (across, down, diagonal) Round 2: Four corners Round 3: All around the outside Round 4: Blackout! We will play one round at a time, then move on to the next. The first person to show me their board is the winner! I will announce the winner and we will move on to the next round!

What is your biggest fear? On the small square of paper, write down your biggest fear or concern about middle school. Raise your hand when you are finished and I will collect your square

Packing up procedure: 1.Clean up area (look inside, under on top of desk) 2.Gather materials and stack neatly on desk
