How the Earth Changes

Big Idea Changes to the earth can be a slow process or a rapid process.

Engagement You will never believe what I saw over summer break! I visited the beautiful island of Hawaii.

I went snorkeling and saw Crush from Finding Nemo. He was totally cool!

Early in the morning as I was getting ready in my 4 star hotel with a gorgeous ocean view, I felt a sudden jolt. Everything around began to shake.

The earth looked as though it was being destroyed from underneath itself. I was puzzled and had no idea what could have caused this rapid change. Can you help me figure out what happened on this strange day?

Focus Question What does an earthquake do to the earth's surface?

Prediction or Hypothesis Example I think that ________ because ________________.

Kit Inventory Water People, houses, and cars Baking Pan Sand /dirt Water Cloth strips

Word Wall Earthquake Rapid Process

General Plan What earthquake model can be made to test our focus question? How can we measure what happens?

First, lay cloth strips in the bottom of the baking pan. Second, pour dirt over cloth strips. Third, sprinkle water over the dirt. Next, place cars, people, and houses. Then, observe and record. Then, pull the cloth strips. Finally, observe what happens. Operational Plan

Collecting Data BeforeAfter

Making Meaning What does our before and after chart tell us? Is there a rule or pattern here?

Claims and Evidence ClaimsEvidence I claim that I claim that because

Closure Today we ______________. We predicted that ___________________. We now know that ______________. We know this because ________________________.
