January 17-18, 2013 Stephen King writes, "I get paid to show people different perspectives. It's like exercising a muscle, rather than letting it go slack. . . . I have not skill that improves the quality of life in a physical sense at all. The only thing I can do is say: 'Look here, this is the way you didn't look at it before. It's just a cloud to you, but look at it, doesn't it look like an elephant?' Somebody says: 'Boy! it does look like an elephant!' And for that, people pay because they've lost all of it themselves." Warm-Up: Have you read any stories or poems about things that come to life? Why do you like or dislike them? Write 1/2 page.

“Beware: Do Not Read This Poem” by Ishmael Reed pg. 531 External Story Internal Story A woman and some other people disappear into a mirror What is the mirror a metaphor for? What’s the theme??

“The Secret” by Denise Levertov pg. 534 Who is the speaker? What can you infer about the speaker’s feelings toward the girls? How could the speaker who wrote the secret not actually know the secret? (l. 5)

Poem about Poetry Poetry speaks indirectly. Poets don’t announce their main point. A good poem lets the readers enter the poem and discover its meaning for themselves. In your journal, write a poem about your experience with poetry. It can be in any style we have learned about.
