What is a land form? A land form is one of the features that make up the Earth’s surface such as plain, mountain, or valley.

Objectives Student is able to discuss geographical concept of location and physical and human characteristics of places. Student will be able to distinguish which landforms are in the state of Texas.

Valley A depression of the earth surrounded by hills or mountains. A valley slopes down to a hill, stream, lake, or ocean. Running water of streams and rivers carve the land and make valleys. There are many valleys in Texas.

Hills Hills are smaller than mountains and have smooth slopes. You can make hills by digging up dirt and dumping it into a large pile. In Texas there are many hills.

Plateau An area of high land, like a hill, but with a flat top. You may also call a plateau a “tableland” because the top of the plateau is flat like a table. There are plateaus in Texas.

Mountains Mountains are very big hills and are usually steep and rocky. Some mountains are so high they have snow at the top. Have you ever been skiing? Snow skiing is a sport of sliding on skis down a mountain. Are there mountains where you live? No, there are no mountains in Texas.

Plains Open, level stretches of land that have no changes in elevation. Some characteristics of plains are: Open and grassy, have cows grazing on them, farmers plant on them. Are there plains in where you live? Yes there are plains in Texas. What type of animal might you find on a plain?

Glaciers A huge mass of ice that flows slowly over land, formed from compacted snow. When more snow falls during the winter, the extra snow gradually builds in layers. Do you know if there are glaciers in Texas? The answer is no.
