NA61 11 October 2010Light Ion for NA61/ S. Maury1 Light Ion in SPS Foreseen to have primary Ar beam physics in 2012 Nothing runs in 2012 NA61 duty cycle below 10%

NA61 11 October 2010Light Ion for NA61/ S. Maury22 Accelerators status Explanation of the second part of the schedule No particular problem for the operation of the Linac2 PSB running as a “swiss clock” since the beginning of the run until the second week of July (MPS trip, ARCON system) Magnetic field fluctuation at the PS injection and extraction for SFTPRO/CNGS beam back to old CT Few water leaks on the main magnets of the SPS repaired or exchanged Pbar production in AD up to 3.5 GeV/c with very good extraction efficiency (Target water station tripping). Ions in good shape in the injectors: EARLY and NOMINAL beams for the LHC injected in the SPS and fragmented beam tests scheduled for the week 47 2

NA61 11 October 2010Light Ion for NA61/ S. Maury3 YearProgrammecomments 2010 Fragmented beam test #1 (100GeV/u, 13GeV/u, plus intermediate value)- Foreseen for week Fragmented beam test #2: optimisation - Physics requested with up to 6 energies, 10 weeks 2012Running in source for Ar and Xe - Needs approval and decision; for now nothing runs in Physics with Ar - Running whole ion chain for 37 weeks( ) (include lead for LHC); startup end of March - Needs additional manpower 2014Physics with Xe - Running whole ion chain for 37 weeks (include lead for LHC); startup end of March - Needs additional manpower 2014(b)Physics with fragmented lead beam- Pushes Xe physics into 2015

NA61 11 October 2010Light Ion for NA61/ S. Maury4 Cycling and intensities 9 injections into SPS 9 x 4 bunches = 4.4E9 ions Yielding ~1E4 Boron fragments/spill [exactly how many is what we want to measure] – 8 x 3.6 seconds injection flat bottom Up to 8 s acceleration (for 158 GeV/u) 4.4 s extraction 2 s rampdown Total cycle 43.2 s (compare to the 15.6 s for fixed-target in the supercycle to-day, 27.6 s difference)

NA61 11 October 2010Light Ion for NA61/ S. Maury9 Impact on proton users No impact on LHC (in case of LHC shutdown NA61 does physics) Positive impact on ISOLDE – Up to six PSB cycles recuperated for Isolde  No impact on AD  Some impact on East Hall / TOF – One 2.4s PS cycle used for ions during tests and setting up – Up to 8 additional 2.4s PS cycles used for ions during run for fragmentation  Obviously North Area proton users suffer the most as proton and ions are not compatible in the North Area) – 0 week in 2010 (fragmentation test foreseen week after proton stop) – 11 weeks in 2011 (fragmentation test + Physics) – 11 weeks in 2013 (Ar primary: SU + run) – 11 weeks in 2014 (Xe primary: SU + run)  Impact on CNGS – Same number of cycles/supercycle but longer supercycle
