Wave Toy Toying with Matter

NB Title (go to your next open page) Materials Make the Toy—observations A B SimilaritiesDifferences Create the T-Chart below in your NB As you are looking at the two bottles that are going around the room find 5-6 ways they are similar and ways they are different.

NB new page Creating a Wave Toy The purpose of the lab was to test each substance against each other and determine which substances were soluble and which were insoluble. Once you have determined the solubility of each substance you should be able to determine what 4 substances are in each bottle (see slide #2) and more specifically what is in each layer of bottle A and what is in each layer of bottle B. Copy the ingredient list  Isopropyl alcohol  Water  Mineral oil  Dye #1: red dye  Dye #2: purple dye

Copy the ball and stick models of three of your ingredients—they need to be exactly duplicated in your NB Mineral Oil Alcohol Water

Solubility Data Table Students who did the lab tested each chemical against each other—hint a grid might be the best type of table to create. KEEP the following in MIND…  Solubility data must be recorded for every pairing of the chemicals.  Keep track of which ingredient might be denser  Data table should be clear, concise, and efficient.  Keep in mind tests can be done for some mixtures of substances as well.

Solubility Data--results

Creating the wave toy recipe (nb title) Sketch each wave toy and label which chemical or chemicals are in each layer. Remember that there are 4 ingredients in each bottle.

Wave Toy :Analysis & Reflection Questions In your NB, copy questions and answer IN COMPLETE SENTENCES Please skip a line between the answer of one question and the start of the next 1. Write out the recipe for one of the wave toys (red or purple). 2. If you were to dye an oil based paint, would you want to use the purple dye or the red dye? Explain your reasoning. 3. There were 4 substances in each bottle. Why were there only 2 layers in each wave bottle? Use evidence from your data chart and key vocabulary in your explanation. 4. Did the red dye and purple dye dissolve the same way in all substances? How did this effect your recipe?
