You Only Get One Chance… “You only get one chance to make a first impression!” On your slate, record what you think this statement means. Share with your partner what you have recorded on your slate. Discuss the similarities between your ideas.

Now It’s Time To ACT! Look at your roll playing cards. Decide who will be play Role #1 and who will play Role #2. Decide who will be play Role #1 and who will play Role #2. Find a reasonable open space around the room – or stay at your desk. You will be acting out what is on your cards. You will be acting out what is on your cards.

Observe This Interaction Did the server give a good first impression? Based on the first impression that you witnessed, do you think that the customer is likely to ever return to the restaurant? Explain why or why not? Explain why or why not? Turn to your partner and discuss your answer!

CLOSE YOUR EYES

What was your first impression? What was the first thing that entered your mind upon meeting your new teacher? Remember, you have never met this teacher before. Remember, you have never met this teacher before. Write one word on your slate to represent how you felt. I can’t stand kids

How can the concept of a first impression be used in writing? Please discuss this at your table. Be prepared to share your group’s thoughts! Did your table think about INTRODUCTIONS?!?

How does an AUTHOR make a first impression? INTRODUCTIONS: “Dialogue” “Dialogue” Ask a Question -?- Ask a Question -?- Descriptive Language Descriptive Language Action word Action word Sound word Sound word State the problem State the problem CRACK! Went the lightning. The sound startled us as we listened to my brother tell us ghost stories. The eagle went SOARING over our heads.

An introduction for a report about snakes that was written by a sixth grade student: Some people think snakes are really scary. Some people think snakes are really cool. This report will show how they are both right. Snakes can be very scary, but they also can do some things, like “tasting” the air and “seeing” heat, that make them really cool. `

Can you identify the change? What if you could “see” heat? What if you could “taste” air? Well, snakes can! Seeing heat and tasting air are just a few of the fascinating characteristics of snakes. Many find snakes to be scary, but with amazing skills such as these, I find them to be very cool! If you said QUESTION, then you are right!

Can you identify the change? “I am terrified of snakes!” yelped Michael. “I am terrified of snakes!” yelped Michael. Melissa replied, “Stop being silly! Snakes are so cool! They can actually see heat and taste the air! If you would just give them a chance you would find that they are fascinating creatures!” If you guessed DIALOGUE, give yourself a pat on the back!

Can you identify the change? The snake could see the heat radiating off of the small child as he quietly slithered past her in search of something to eat. As he passed slowly, the snake was tasting the air in search of his next meal. This creature’s unique abilities make it a sly and talented hunter. Did you guess ACTION WORD? You’re right!

Can you identify the change? Snakes are terribly misunderstood and passed off as scary and creepy creatures. However, I think that they are fantastic pets! While their glowing eyes and flickering tongues make them look a bit frightening, they are actually using these attributes to help them search for food. In fact, snakes have the special ability to taste the air and see heat. This introduction States the problem

Now it’s YOUR turn! Use the facts below to help you write a great introduction for an essay about owls. Owls are great hunters. Owls have keen eye sight. Owls have razor sharp claws. Owls have a sharp and powerful beak. Most importantly, owls have fantastic hearing. From far away owls can hear rodents running under a thick layer of snow!
